Ludlow schools adopt 'Protect Act' amid ICE concerns
School Committee · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Ludlow rushes a state-mandated immigration policy into place and closes the books on a $59 million school. The School Committee waived its usual two-reading process to adopt the "Protect Act" policy, which bars civil immigration arrests on campus without a judicial warrant; Ms. Quinn said "the law is governing our behavior," not restricting federal agents directly.
Dr. Kelleher reported the Chapin Street School building project finished about 10 percent under its $59 million budget and "well under" the town's original $30 million funding ask, crediting pre-pandemic material purchases for avoiding cost spikes; the committee then voted unanimously to dissolve the building committee. Members also approved a revised facilities fee schedule eliminating most youth-sports and nonprofit rental fees while keeping charges on the district's gyms and stadium, and unanimously approved a Harvard Model Congress trip estimated at $1,000 per student.
