Board of Health · Meeting of June 9, 2026
Ludlow Board of Health unanimously adopts food establishment regulation closing an eight-year permitting gap. The board voted Tuesday to restore local permitting authority over prepackaged, non-temperature-controlled-for-safety foods sold at farmers markets and temporary food events, a gap created when Massachusetts updated its Food Code in 2018. The regulation, which takes effect July 1, 2026, includes a commercially processed exemption that leaves large retailers such as Home Depot and Michaels unaffected while bringing temporary-event food vendors back under local oversight.
Health Director Paulina told the board the rule had been reviewed by the Massachusetts Association of Health Boards and the regional public health training hub, and was discussed with four partner towns in the shared-services environmental working group. No members of the public appeared at the hearing, which opened and closed within seven minutes. The board also received word that community health advocate Lizzie Ortiz began work June 1 and that a health fair is set for August 21, with more than 16 vendors confirmed.
